Located then and now on the corner of Twelfth Avenue and Seventh Street South, the sanctuary of the Church of Christ (First Christian Church) building that was completed in 1949 is seen here. The Golden Glow Tower next to the church was a project of the congregation. The windows in the back wall mark the “cry room” for families with young children.

Five

DOWNTOWN AND

NEIGHBORHOODS

The face of Nampa changed many times over the years. The commercial center took on new looks when various buildings were added, given facelifts, or razed. Architectural styles changed both in the business district and in the residential neighborhoods. Homes ranged from palatial to just functional, as in any city. Memories are filled with big houses owned by the prominent citizens, but there were also other, smaller homes that people lived out their lives in, and their memories are just as important.

Streets went from dirt in dry weather to mud on rainy days. For example, in August 1920, Mayor H.H. Keim had been badgered about doing something to remedy the deplorable condition of Seventeenth Avenue South. He finally listened when, after a rainstorm, he was driving his delivery wagon down the street and became hopelessly mired in the mud. He had to call Young Transfer and Storage to pull him out. Soon after, a successful movement to pave the city’s streets began. Today, there are multiple lanes on the streets and highways, and it is hard for modern youngsters to even imagine anything of the sort happening in this city.

This chapter looks at a cross section of the city as the years passed by.
